As someone who had braces for four and half years (and wore a head gear for three years before that- yes, it was definitely a character building experience), I understand both the confidence that can come from having a nice smile, and the embarrassment that can come from not liking your teeth. Of course, your smile should not be the source of your confidence, nor keep you from feeling good about yourself, but as humans, we do tend to be self conscious about these things. Dental and orthodontic work can be extremely expensive, and while I don’t have any suggestions for straightening your teeth at home, I do have a few suggestions for whitening your teeth and keeping your teeth white without having to visit the dentist.
- Whitening kits. You’ve seen the commercials, I’m sure. There are a lot of over the counter options for whitening your teeth, and they’re getting more and more convenient every day. You don’t even need to be at home in order to whiten your teeth these days- most brands have portable and disposable teeth whitening options in the form of strips or paste.
- Hydrogen peroxide. Using hydrogen peroxide (the 3% solution) as a mouthwash before brushing your teeth and mixing it with baking soda to create homemade toothpaste to use once a week is a great way to whiten your teeth at home. It’s extremely easy to do, and is a much cheaper option than purchasing whitening kits or going to the dentist.
- Avoid food and beverages that stain teeth. True, this won’t get rid of the yellowing or damage that has already taken place, but it will keep your teeth from getting any worse. This is especially important to do in concert with whitening your teeth, as it’s harder to see results if you continue using the same things that stained your teeth in the first place. If you’re unwilling or unable to abstain from them, brushing your teeth immediately after consuming said food and beverages is also acceptable.
Regardless of your schedule or budget, whitening your teeth yourself can be easy, cheap, and convenient. There are a lot of options, and more and more are being invented and discovered every day. So go out there, get whitening, and keep smiling.
